LEARN THE FACTS

Before making a decision, it’s important to understand the full picture. Here you’ll find clear, factual information about where property tax dollars go, the relief programs already in place, and the real consequences of past cuts. These are the facts shaping the future of our community.

WHAT DO PROPERTY TAXES PAY FOR?
Property Taxes pay for our local services:
-
Local Schools
-
Road Maintenance & Snow Removal
-
Emergency Response
-
Hospital District and Public Health
-
Court House, Town Hall and Operations
-
Library
-
County Extension Services
-
Public servant employee and benefits
Each entity depends on property tax dollars to fund their vital services.

EXISTING RELIEF
Wyoming already has residential property tax exemptions for:
-
Veterans
-
Long Term Homeowners
-
Low-Income Seniors
By providing relief for homeowners who need it most, we have developed a system that balances reasonable property tax relief with funding for the services we need in our communities.

WHAT WE ALREADY CUT
Last year, when the 25% cut was realized, we had to cut funding to:
-
Search and Rescue
-
4-H and Fair
-
Employee salaries and benefits
-
Library
-
Museum
-
Senior Center
-
Chamber of Commerce
-
Economic Development
-
Schools
-
Hospital District
-
Much, much more
If a 25% cut hurt us this badly, and is already cutting into vital services, we are scared to think about what we would be forced to cut if we cut out another 25%.

WE HAVE LOW TAX RATES
Wyoming's residential property taxes are already among the lowest in the nation. The average effective property tax rate in the U.S. is about 0.9%, while Wyoming’s rate is 0.55%–0.58%.
Hot Springs County is even lower than the Wyoming average. Local effective rates are around 0.54%, which is about 40% lower than the U.S. average.
Bottom line: Wyoming homeowners already benefit from a relatively low property tax burden compared to most states—and those dollars fund essential local services like schools, roads, and emergency services.
